Thomas Elger was born on 27 October 1836 in Bedford, where his family had been established for several generations, and educated at Bedford School. His father Thomas Gwyn Elger (1794 – 1841) was an architect and builder. Grandfather, father and son engaged in town politics, and all held the post of mayor.

Thomas Elger was born in 1854, at birth place, to William Elger and Louisa Elger (born Grange). William was born circa 1793, in Godmanchester Hunts or Colne, Hunts. Louisa was born circa 1820, in Ramsey, Hunts. Thomas had 10 siblings: Maria Tattersall (born Elger), John Elger and 8 other siblings.
Died Bedford, England, 9 January 1897 Thomas Elger, one of the preeminent amateur lunar observers of the Victorian era, was a leader in British amateur astronomical associations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. An avid observer and popularizer, he is best known for his lunar map, considered one of the best available until the space age.
